Typical Sales Agent Profiles

Agents are typically male, aged 40-70. The median age is around 55. A few agents are in their 30’s and hardly any in their 20’s. However many are well into their 60’s and 70’s. Some are in their 80’s and even 90’s! Females are very rare: perhaps only 10% of agents are female.

 

Agent Entrepreneurialism

  • Agents are not as money motivated as you might expect: agency work is a lifestyle choice for many
  • Many agents are in a relatively comfortable niche where the relationship between risk and reward is in their favour
  • They are low investment entrepreneurs (in terms of money)
  • There are very low barriers to entry (and exit)
    • No fixed overhead
    • No stock
    • No premises
    • No staff
    • No equipment
  • Their investment is their time
  • Their assets are relationships
  • Their risks are mainly in terms of time wasted and customer relationships that can be damaged if they take on the wrong agencies, etc

Working with sales agents can be an ideal way to grow a business or launch a new product with minimal costs. Often sales agents are the most cost-effective, quickest and lowest risk route to market. They may also simply be the best strategy when trying to open up new markets, where pre-existing customer relationships are key.
